Hi,
I am a Canadian citizen and have lived and worked in USA on TN Visa since 2005.
I am retiring next month and planning live on my Social Security benefit amount.
I will be moving to Philippines for my retirement.
Do I need to file my taxes in Canada for the Social security benefit amount?
Thanks

Short answer is "NO". As a non-resident (of Canada) you pay taxes only on income from Canadian sources.

Thanks for your reply.
What if I have to come back from Philippines and live in Canada after a few years. Then, do I have to pay taxes on my USA Social security benefit?

General rule: You have to pay tax on worldwide income to the country to which you are tax resident.
So, yes to your question. However, you would have paid taxes on the same income to USA which can be used to offset Canadian taxes.

... and since the question is on US Social Security, it SPECIFICALLY is only taxed in Canada for Cdn residents -- by treaty.
nelsona non grata. Non pro. Please Search previous posts, no situation is unique as you might think. Happy Browsing
