Canadian moving to US on TN: tax witholding question

Post by farmerjoe »

Hi,

Thanks for these forums - they're awesome - I will very likely be contacting your firm to help me with my returns next year!

I am a Canadian citizen moving to Texas on a TN visa in a month. I intend to meet first choice requirements as a US resident alien this year, and rent my house in Toronto. My questions are as follows:

1) The firm I am joining requires me to complete tax witholding forms. As I understand it I require only a W-4and W-9 - is that correct?

2) The W-9 makes reference to *possible* exemptions to witholding under the saving clause of a tax treaty (and if applicable asks for an attached statement to that affect) - are there any that are relevant for me?

Regards,
J

If you are en employee, only W-4 is required. W-9 would be for other types of remuneration, which liley doesn't apply to you, and certainly has nothing to do with whatever you were talking about.

Regardless of were you end up living, wages are subject to US withholding, and this is goverened by what you put on W-4.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
