Voluntary CPP Contributions

Post by akumar »

Tax situation

Live in Canada and work in USA.
-11 years contributing to social security (all at max)
-15 years of CPP contributions, all prior to 2010. est $704 payout at age 65.
-15 years to retirement, assume will continue to work in USA

Question, should I make a voluntary CPP contribution.

Turbo tax prompted that question?

No. You are not permitted to make CPP payments (voluntary or otherwise) on foreign employment income on which you are paying into another country's social security system.

If you look at the tax line for such contributions, this will become clear.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
