US Tax Reporting of RESP

Post by Baja_saf »

How do I get details of earnings of my RESP for 2010? The only thing I received is quarterly statements, which don't show different categories of earnings.

Having worked in the US in 2010, I've now found I have to report my RESP in the US tax returns. Looks like there are three forms to be reported - TD 90.221 for FBAR, Forms 3520 and 3520-A.

It seems I need a Form 1099 equivalent for the RESP's interest income, dividends, and realized gains (short and long term) for 2010, even though all earnings in the RESP were re-invested and I did not take anything out of the RESP. I contacted the brokerage but was told the only thing available for my RESP is the quarterly statements.

Has anyone here got experience with getting a 1099 type of tax slip (T4?) from a Canadian brokerage for a RESP? What exact questions should I be asking?

Thanks.
