Working virtually for a US company

Post by peter2010 »

My work is virtual and I can work from pretty much any place. I have worked from US, Asia as well as Canada. I have spent about half time in Asia, about 40% in Canada and 10% in the US. For tax purposes would I be deemed a resident of Canada? I have no ties to Canada such as no DL, no bank accounts, no OHIP, no house or apt, but I do have family in Canada.

You are a tax resident of canada by virtue of not having established residence elsewhere. Your world income is 100% taxable in canada.

You are not taxable in US unless you are an employee of the US firm, in which case 10% of your income would be taxable in US.

I have assumed that you re not a ta x resident of a particular asian country.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
