filing deadline for citizens living abroad

Post by Montreal_us »

If a US citizen was living outside the US in 2002 ,the filing deadline was June 15,2003.When is the 3 year deadline to request a refund (eg.Additional child tax credit) in that case April 15 or june 15,2006?

3 years form YOUR due date, or 3 years from the date you filed that return, whichever is later.

So if you filed June 10the 2003, your dealdine in June 15th 2006.

If you filed September 20th 2003, your deadline is Setember 20 2006.

I would file tomorrow, in any event. Why wait 'til spring.

Thanks, but what I'asking is ,if a person did not yet file his 2002 return ,when would the 3 year deadline expire,April or June 15,2006?The question really is,is the due date April 15,but there is an extension(more of a "tolerance",since interest is charged as of April 15) provided of two months,or does June 15 become the actual deadline? The IRS line(as reliable as that is) has given conflicting replies.

As I read it, if you have not filed yet, you have until June 15th 2006 to file and still get the credit

Your due date, which is really all that matters, was June 15th 2003.

But why on earth do you care? Get a return, fill it out, and get your refund.

If you were a US citizen in 2002, you were required to file in any event, so get a move on!

Yes.

Cdn citizens are not required to file in Canada if they no longer have residential ties.

US citizens must ALWAYS file, regardless of their residence.
