Comparing US to Canada Federal Taxes

Post by future_canuck »

I'm looking to do a rough comparison for the sake of estimating taxes in Canada if/when my wife and I move to the country. In the US, when you file taxes jointly, your tax brackets now double compared to filing singly. My understanding for Canadian taxes is that you can only file singly and if you have a spouse, you get credits. Do the credits apply in such a way that your "joint" tax brackets would come out similar to the US (i.e. doubles the income thresholds), or is it not anywhere close to that? Is there a good tool for estimating Canadian taxes for a theoretical condition? Should I download a free tax software and run numbers?
