I have been reading about the "American opportunity credit".
Am I able to claim this credit if daughter is attending college out of the US?
BACKGROUND
My daughter is a US resident alien (green card).
She is currently attending university out of country (UBC - Canada).
She is working toward a 4yr BSc degree.
She only had income of $1200 in 2009.
She did not get any scholarships.
She is dependent financially on my wife and I to fund her college expenses.
NOTE
I phoned the IRS and they ran me thru a series of questions.
From their perspective everything was ok - except I had to verify if UBC was (verbatim) : "eligible to participate in a student aid program that is administered by the US department of education?"
I then emailed UBC and asked that direct question.
They returned with the following answer :
"Yes, we are a Title IV school and we do administer FFELP loans."
I am not sure if I have done my due diligence and should just claim the credit.
Can I claim educ costs if daughter is international student

It is as the IRS said. UBC is an accrddited school, most major Cdn Univs are. The school however should be able to document this for your records.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
