New tax treaty about social security/ CPP?

Post by chemist »

I guess I won't get any of my S.S/MediCare contribution back unless I will keep working in the States for 10 year.(?).
Any one has any idea whether the new tax treaty would address the issue for canadian citizens working in US?

Thanks for any comment.

Not quite sure what you are getting at; Cdns have enjoyed special consideration for SS for YEARS, and it has nothing to do with any tax treaty.

This has all been explained here dozens of times, but, in a nutshell, as long as you work 1.5 years in US (6 quarters), you will get some SS when you retire, as long as your total work years in US and canada add up to at least 10.

To get medicare, you ahve to be 65 anyways, if you work until you are 65 in US, you will have the required time for medicare.

Go on the SSA website and look for international agreements. These have nothing to do with taxation, and are called totalization agreements.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
