Basic tax question about moving to canada

Post by bwc »

I have tried to search this site for some answers, so apologies as I am sure this has been answered before. Its pretty basic.

My husband and I are looking to move to Canada..he will be working for an Asian company. I am a US citizen and he is British with a US green card. We are trying to assess the package and hoping you can help with basic questions:

How much will our income be taxed in Canada vs US? Surely we arent hit up twice equally, but do you end up paying a lot more than if we just stayed in the US? Say for example, we earn 200k USD year.

We would get a foreign tax credit plus the automatic deduction of approx 90k USD ?

Mainly wondering about the basics....I assume between US and Canada the amount you are taxed isnt all that much more than if you lived in US and taxed at the normal rate (otherwise I dont see how any american could afford to live there), but can you clarify some of this?

Thanks.

There are calculators out there depending on the province of residence.

Most US taxpayers living in canada pay no tax to the US, as their cdn tax liability is far higher than the US fed taxrate. The mechanics are unimportant as to credits/deductions etc.

So, you need to look only at the Cdn taxes.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
