Residency Status in Canada for the year I left (maintain residential ties)

Post by lemontea »

I left Canada in August 2019 (stayed more than 183 days) and moved to the US permanently, but I maintain residential ties with Canada (a house, credit card, bank accounts). What would be my residency status in Canada for the 2019 tax year?

Thanks!

You are considered a "deemed non-resident, and shpuld file a departure return with August departure date. CRA views becoming a resident of another treaty country (satisfying both IRS and treaty definitions) sufficient to "push" you out of canada, forcing you to file departure taxes, etc.
