Working part-time for US firm in Canada

Post by Marilyn »

Hello Everyone,

I currently am on a TN visa and working in Florida. I am returning to school in Canada. My company would like to set up a "Canadian office" and have me work for it part time. I would be the only employee initially.

From what I could read, if my company sets up an office in Canada, I only owe taxes to Canada and they should pay into Canadian taxes and unemployment insurance. Will they have to pay me in Cdn funds, or US?

Should I just go the route of a contractor? Would my company just pay me with a 1099 and I only pay taxes to Canada? Do I actually have to have a business in Canada to be a contractor, or can you just be one?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!
