Never filed RRSP info with US return

Post by davev30 »

How far back do you have to go if you've never filed any RRSP information with a US return? Do you have to go back to the beginning? The beginning in this case is 1972. For those years that have to filed is a 1040X required together with either a statement regarding the election to defer or a form 8891? Shoudl penaties be expected if there were no withdrawals?

6 years is the rule of thumb.

Of course, actually determining what portion of your RRSP is not taxable is going to be quite difficult if you have not been tracking for all this time...
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
