Collapsing an individual and a spousal RRSP into one account

Post by benryan »

My wife has two RRSP accounts in her name, one is an individual RRSP account and the other is a spousal RRSP account.

Can these be collasped into one RRSP account?

(I was under the impression they could not, but maybe I am out of date, as I left Canada in 2000).

There is no requirement that spousal and individula accounts be kept apart, although if living in Canada, thisis lmost alwayts done, to aoid attribution rules.

Since attribution does not apply to non-residents, most brokerages (TDW at any rate) lump them.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
