Corrections to FEIE

Post by JohnSt »

Looking back at past forms, I have made two errors that could impact my foreign earned income exclusions. For complicated reasons, I need to change my 2002 filing from MFJ to MFS. No other changes on that form. Will this impact my exclusion?

I also need to change my 2005 form. I did not include enough of my wages in the FEIE for that year. Can this be done? Although I am not aware of other changes, how far can one go back to make changes to FEIE amounts? Thanks in advance.

Once you have filed a joint return, you cannot change the return to MFS after the due date, so forget that one.

You can change an error in your FEIE as far back as you wish. Definitely 3 years back, probably more.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
