First time TN, need help with filing US income tax return

Post by jm_sf »

I got hired to be a full-time employee with a Californian company. I started last august with a TN-visa.

This will be my first time filing for tax return.

I have a few questions. I would appreciate your help.

- Can I file with form 1040, or 1040-nr is recquired? Is it the same for state taxes?

- Currently, I have 5 kinds of with-holdings from my paychek stub: federal w/h, OASDI, MEDICARE, state w/h, and state SDI. Am I eligible for some exemptions? Someone told me that I could be exempted from social security or medicare (i forgot which) since I'm Canadian.

- Do I need to file form 8233?

- Although I am a full time employe, I work as a consultant for clients. Since my client' site is far from where I live I cannot commute, I had to rent a car for the 6-month contract with the client. They reimburse me for the gas mileage and bridge toll, but not for the rental. Can I add the monthly rental fee as unreimbursed employee expenses?

- Is there anything important that I should know? Where can I find more help for similar cases?

Thanks for your help

Your 'first year' taxes are dicussed at legnth on dozens of threads here, happy browsing.

You casnnoy exempt yourself from any of thepayroll taxes you mentionned, sdinceyou areemployed in US, and in CA.

Employee expenses are pretty losely defined. i would suggest looking at theIRS website for specific answers to your situation, and then come back here. Not hreally a cross-border issue, though...
