So I guess when you re-filed your 2003 taxes a few weeks ago, you had to add the 401(K) withdrawal to your 1040. That's too bad, since that likely raised its tax rate considerably, since as a non-resident for 2003, you would have had no other US-source income, and would have paid much less than what you ended up paying on it on your new 1040.
A person in your situation (normally) should have, at the end of 2003 , filed a 1040NR to recoup most of the tax withheld.
Withdrawing a 401(k)/IRA early in the year you leave US (but before going back to Canada) is a known way of getting a very low taxrate on your withdrawal.
Too bad you couldn't take full advantage of it.
