Departure exit tax year

Post by sympatico1 »

Hello,

I am working in US from Nov 2004, and filed my 2004 taxes in Canada, but did not tell CRA that I left Canada.

I called CRA yesterday, and they said just send us a letter that you left Canada in 2004

my Question:

Does it make any difference to send letter or not? (I forgot to ask CRA the same question !!!)

Thanks

They have asked you to send a letter.

Before sending it, I would just check over my 2004 return to be sure that I met all the requirements of some one leaving, including putting a proper departure date (this will affect your deductions by about $100) and that you declared your deemed dispositions and paid tax on them (if you held any investments on the day you left canada). There was also a report that you would have had to make on the day you left. The Emigrants guide listes all the steps you should have taken.

The letter will serve as a trigger for them to revirew exactly this, so just be prepared to pay a little tax for 2004. they may simply wave their hand, but technically, you did filke incorrectly for 2004.

It is very easy top become a cdn non-resident, but at some point you had to tell them, and follow a few simple instructions -- which you did not.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

I lived and worked for 4 different Countries so far and never reported my income to the other ones. (Canada is the first one asking for it !!!)
