Residency with a home and a lease

Post by vint »

I have a home in Canada.

I moved to the US 8 months ago.

I am looking to sign a lease for a place here in California (I was living in hotels up until now).

How would they determine residency? Am I putting myself at any risk?

Medium term, I'm open to selling my property in Canada if necessary to save a ton on taxes.

Until you have a "home" in US (not hotels), you are not considered as having left Canada Once you do, you will be considered non-resident.
