Leaving Canada without filing departure return

Post by potatochips »

The emigrants page of the CRA website says that if we determine we don't owe tax (and don't want a refund) then we do not need to file a departure tax return. Then, there's this line:

"If you determine that you do not have to file a return, you should let the CRA know the date you left Canada as soon as possible."

Has anyone ever done this? How exactly do we "let the CRA know"? I don't see an option for this in the online account -- would I have to call or email them?

But recall, that there are other situations that require one to file a tax return. So, you would want to make sure you don't meet any of these requirements either.
