Canadian Home sale reporting

Post by pradovic »

Is there anything to report to IRS re. the house that got sold after US residency started?
Could home sale costs (agent, lawyer fees, etc.) be claimed as relocation costs, seeing the purpose of the sale was to move close to where the USA job is?
Thanks.

The sale must be reported, but will be excluded from cap gains tax based on it being your principal residence before you left canada, and the fact you sold it within 3 years of leaving canada.

None of the real estate fees expended either to sell old or buy new porperty are considered moving expenses.

Your company may have other definitions for relo costs, which they may reimburse you for, but this would be added to your income.
