TN to H1B: first year taxes

Post by pradovic »

I entered USA on a TN visa in April 2005.
Wife sold house in Canada in June 2005, then left for USA in July 2005 (on TD visa).
In August we switched from TN/TD visas to H1b/H4 visas.
We haven't travelled back to Canada yet.

Being new to this situation, any help re. how to file Canadian/USA taxes (approach, forms etc.) would be welcome, as well as info on whether we need to report home sale (how to do that, what country to report, etc.)
Thanks in advance.

All thesse questions about transition year taxes have been delat with previously on many threads on this borad as welll as grasmick.com tax board (now dead, but lots of useful info).

Your main source of info is the "Emigrants Guide" from CRA for your Cdn exit return, and IRS Pub. 519 for your first US returns.
nelsona non grata. Non pro. Please Search previous posts, no situation is unique as you might think. Happy Browsing :D

TN1 H1B

Your question requires a daylong tutorial. However, I can tell you that switching from TN1 to H1B is irrelevent for tax purposes.
