CAD Resident / New US TN Worker Needing Guidance

Post by moch »

Hey all, as the title says, I'm a new (as of Jan 2017) TN worker in the state of NY. Originally from Montreal. I'm lost and could use some assistance.

- My stint in the US will last 12-24 months at most.
- I have a condo in Montreal which isn't yet rented, but will be in a couple of weeks (haven't decided if I will rent it cash to a friend or with a lease agreement).
- I haven't declared anything to CRA as far as moving to the US.
- I thought I would like to keep my residency, as I'm coming back "soon", but also because I fly back once every 3 weeks to visit family/friends.
- I have emptied my TFSA and cash accounts, all I have left is my REERs.
- I have a 401K with my American employer.

Clearly I'm in over my head. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Once you rent out your property ,, yo uwil lno longer be said to be keeping your residency in Canada.

Lots of posts about emigrating from Canada and first year US taxes.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
