Tax help - self employ questions

Post by Journadian »

I'm a USA resident moved here 10months ago. I worked as a consultant for a Canadian company and continued working for the same company in my us home.

I'm extremely dumb for not researching sooner and am doing this last min. I have not done quarterly taxes or register as a sole proprietor.

Questions

1. Do I need to register as a business? Im a web designer.
I believe I need to file 1099 for freelancers. 1040 for first year self employ.
2. My invoices to the company did not include tax... I'm not sure how to charge it.
I've searched that there's an employment tax rate for freelancers and employers, is that calculated in into the subtotal of the invoice?
3. SE tax and Medicare tax that added to the invoice too?

4. Schedule c expense filing.. until I started doing research I didn't realize how much I'm going to have to pay in taxes in the USA (I made under 30k cdn). I wonder if I can expense somethings (might be a long shot).
-internet (but the bill is under my husband's name)?
-home office (mortgage also under husband's name)?

So for last years taxes,

5. File canadian income taxes only for the time I was there?
6. In USA, file both self employment taxes and income taxes for entire year?

This is looking like a nightmare and I still have financial ties to Canada (bank account, rrsp, .. I should have quit the job....

What is your immigration status in US?
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
