TN Visa taxes

Post by march »

Hi,
I find this forum very useful thank for all the help.
I have few questions regarding my particular case and need advise:
I am planning to work in US on TN visa in Texas as FTE and shall be leaving shortly. I own house in AB and my wife works and have two kids. I posses RRSP, TFSA, RESP and bank accts.
1. I am planning to leave my family here and decide later to move to US, I need to know for taxes what are the things I need to take care before I leave, what should I do for RRSP, RESP and savings accounts.
2. Since I may be staying more than 183 days in US, how do I file taxes as US resident or Canada resident.
3. Do I need to file both taxes what are things I need to be aware of.
4. Also if my company is offering 401k how is it considered for taxes in Canada.
5. When do I file taxes is it same time as Canada or different time, also if I start working say middle of December what are important dates I need to be aware and any important forms do I need to fill and send.
6. Also how does my situation change if I take my family with me later and leave my house will this benefit taxes. what happens to RRSP, TFSA, RESP how can I make them tax sheltered.
7. Also please advise what are key important things for me to do while I am in Canada before going to US. Is Alberta taxing and Texas similar do I need to see which state to file taxes.

Thanks for all the help
really need advise.

I think you will find most of the answers to these questions in this forum already.
Because you are leaving your family behind and likely visiting them from time to time, you will remain a Cdn resident
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

Thanks for the reply Nelsona,
I am relatively new to this forum and really short of time, I am having trouble to find specific answers to questions. Is there a summary of what all things I need to do and make sure before leaving to US for all the bank accounts, TFSA, RRSP and RESP.

Also what are the things I need to do filing taxes if I am leaving in December do I need to file Canada taxes in march for 2016 and also file US taxes, when do I file US taxes. Since my family is the Canada and house how does this impact.

Please advise.
Thanks again.

AS I said, you aren't really leaving Canada, so there is no urgency to do anything right now, and thus plenty time to look for answers.
