Timeline for closing Account before moving to USA

Post by minster »

I am moving from Canada to USA on September 30th with plans on becoming a non resident in Canada right away to avoid double taxation issues.

I have 3 accounts with Questrade: Margin, TFSA and RRSP. My plan was to close out my Margin + TFSA accounts before I leave Canada, and give Questrade my US address for the RRSP account.

How sensitive is the timeline between account closure, and entering the US with my TN visa? I am doing a few currency transfers and I am afraid I would still be doing trades/transfers in my margin and TFSA for up to a week after I enter the USA.
Should I absolutely avoid this, or does it not matter?
