Filing status question

Post by MikeRitchie »

Background: USC was resident in Canada Jan - Apr; relocated to US during the year; got married to Cdn citizen (ceremony in Canada) after relocating (she has also relocated to US during the year).

Subsequent to marriage, I requested a marriage certificate, but never received one. Not sure if it got lost in mail or officiant never filed it. So not totally clear if we are legally married.

Given our income levels, filing as Single in US would certainly be advantageous. Are we eligible to file Single? Would IRS question that status?

You are married. You cannot file single. File jointly as married full year 1040.
nelsona non grata. Non pro. Please Search previous posts, no situation is unique as you might think. Happy Browsing :D
