Oh geez. I might as well just file the 1040 for the whole year 2012 then.

I don't see any benefit to doing dual status instead of just doing the 1040. Am I missing the point to dual status?

The point to dual status is for those like you who leave US jurisdiction mid-year. It is always optional in a departure year. You do it both ways and see.

Full-year and dual-year will yield differentr tax results. But in your case, the reporting requirements are your concern, andthse don't change.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
