The problem is you ahve already listened to this guy, and he filed incorrectly. Now, in order to coirrect this, you will have to correct it with the date, and fulfill all the other requirements of departure return, which includes a couple of forms.

he should have done this in the first place, but was to lame to do it.

I guess he still is.

Look at the "Emigrants" guide.

Do not submit form NR73 unless the government asks for it, regardless of what your jerk-off acct says.

Why would you have paid an accountant lots of money to do what he treated like an "ordinary" return, which is all the service he did for you. you could have done this yourself for $25 on-line.

Oh well. he has to fix it, but probably doesn't have a clue how to.

i totally agree with you about the $25 on-line return but i didnt know that until now. i searched many sites on the net and unfortunately found this one too late. maybe i should just cut my losses with him and file it myself now.

I thought you said you already filed your return. If you did, the on-line services are pointless, since you are filing an amended return.

If you have not filed yet, tell your CPA to stop sitting on his brains and get busy.

no they did all the paper work and they mailed me the completed forms, i had to sign and fax them back before they filed them for me. once i saw i was going to have to pay $3000 i said stop and found this site.

now he is telling me that his american tax expert is on vacation for three weeks so i have to wait until she gets back to file my return so she can fix it. so i dont really want to go ahead with this guy because he is saying it may cost another $400 to fix it, no matter how long i argued with him.

T1-ADJ is the starting point for changing your return.

Why does he need his american expert? Your Cdn tax return, properly filed, will have NO US income on it. You might as well have moved to Tibet.

There is no need for an american expert to file your Cdn departure tax return, since you will not be reporting any US income, and thus will not need to claim any US tax credits.

This guy is a moron... worse, he's cheating you, now.

Calmly take the time to do your taxes on ufile.ca. never mind that today is the last day. there is no harm in filing a little late. Read the Emigrants guide. You won't be able to e-file anyways since you are non-resident.
