W-9 Requirement

W-9 Requirement

I have recently stumbled across a reference to the W-9 form. I am a USC and longtime Canadian resident and have never been asked by a Canadian financial institution, if I am a US citizen, and have never filed a W-9. Is it required by the IRS?

Yes.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

To clarify, it is required by some financial institutions to avoid having to withhold tax on interst and other payments they make to you.

I guess the Cdn institutions that deal with you don't know you are US citizen.
