W2 question

Post by havefuns »

Hi, I have a question on W2:

Has Box 1 on W2 already included the social security wage (box 3) and medicare wage (box 5) and their tax withheld?

In other words, shall I add all boxes value when I filled Canadian Tax?

Thank you very much.

Except in rare instances, Box 1 includes those taxes, so, no, you do not add these to your wages when you report to CRA.

You do have to add any 401(k) contributions you made, however to your wage total.

1) On Line 115: other pension or superannuation. The Guild says " United States Social Secuity - includes on line 115 the full amount, in canadian dollars, of your U.S. social security benefits. You can claim a deduction for part of this income. See 256."

2) On Line 256: additioanl deductions. The Guild says "under the canada-us tax treaty, you can claim a deduction equal to 15% of the U.S. social security benefits included in your income on line 115"

So what should I do in these two lines?

Thank you so much.

Line 115 and 256 refer to Social Security BENEFITS that one receives, normally at retirement.

Social security and Medicare TAXES (also known as FICA) are included in wages, and then CREDITED as part of foreign tax credit on line 431.
