Tax Residency implication of moving from Canada to USA

Post by jahapanah »

if someone moves from canada to usa in September (implying >183 days stay in Canada), will the salary earned in USA post September subject to tax in canada later?

Note : . no significant ties (residential/dependents/etc) with canada apart from a bank account and rrsp account. no other investments either.

It shouldn't. You'd file a departure return with CRA, giving your departure date and declaring your worldwide income up to that date.

I will be in a similar situation as well. So for the 2025 tax return to CRA, I guess I'd only need to report the income earned / taxes paid while I was in Canada before I cut ties? And I could receive a refund if I'm owed any?
