Confusion about the "immigration date" in Client Data Enquiry

Post by nachochip »

I am a Canadian with working visa in US. I returned to Canada to work in 11/2024 after living in US since 2005. I filed for non-resident status around 2005. I was back in Canada briefly from late 2013 to early 2014 while awaiting a new work visa. As I prepare my 2024 tax return, my CPA checked my CRA information via the 'Client Data Enquiry' page and found an 'Immigration date' of 01/15/2014. We are both unsure why this date appears, as I haven't declared a return to Canada on any tax return since 2005. From 2005 to 2023, I filed US tax returns every year, as all my income and work was from the US.

Online research suggests the 'Immigration date' is for recent immigrants. However, I've been a Canadian citizen since 2000, so this date is confusing. What event could have triggered this record? I'm worried that entering my actual entry date of 11/2024 on my 2024 T1 form might cause problems. Someone online mentioned the e-file might be rejected due to a date mismatch with CRA records, with a error code 2130 "There is a current year immigration date recorded with the Canada Revenue Agency, but one was not enteretd on this return".

I'm unsure if this 'Immigration date' means the CRA considers me a tax resident from that date?
If I contact the CRA, what concerns should I have, and what documentation should I prepare?

I'd appreciate any insights from anyone; thanks in advance.

I would not worry about this. Nothing that CRA would be able to do with this information in any event.

Simply filing your newcomer return with return date of dd/11/24, and follow the steps of a newcomer. You might not be able to efail in any event due to part-year return, but again, no worry.

Thanks!! Do you think CRA will ask me anything if I submit my new comer return for 2024 this year, cause I am not sure whether I can get much information from IRS for something that long, I only keep my IRS tax information for 6 years.

Do you recommend for me to submit a R74 form before filing the 2024 tax?

No. You became a resident in 11/2024. Case closed!
