Thank you Nelsona

Post by BeaconHillWealth »

Hi everyone

I wanted to send out a big overdue thank you to Nelsona on this board. I honestly do not know who this individual is, however, they have been instrumental in the moderation, replies and activity in this community.

I started my professional cross-border tax career in 2005 and the information that Nelsona provided in this forum was invaluable. At that time there was very little Canadian/US cross-border tax information online and his expertise and insights were so very helpful.

He's helped countless forum members with their questions over the years and continues to provide comprehensive answer to members to this day. I know how tedious and difficult it can be to continue providing cross-border content to the community.

Obtaining this type of information is very expensive from professionals in the space and his contribution to the community cannot be understated.

Nelsona, thank you for everything you do, it doesn't go unnoticed.

Regard

While we are doling out admiration, let me say that Phil's entertaining and very detailed Youtube videos on many cross-border aspects are invaluable, particularly for dual citizens living north of the border.

My only concern is that he does many of these while *driving*!!! Yikes!

Stay safe, Phil

Chiming in with a very warm endorsement of Phil's comment. My job was transferred from Canada to US in 2002, by a US-based multinational employer. Part of the transfer package was that my and spouse's Canadian and US tax returns for 2002 were prepared at employer expense by PWC. I'd always done my own Canadian returns, and I found PWC difficult to work with (in fairness, I had no prior experience of working with an accountant and in retrospect I realize I would not have been any easy client) and they made several errors in the Canadian returns. (The US return, of course, I couldn't tell). I was shocked by this and even more shocked by the bill. I realized that we couldn't afford to pay for an accountant to do our US returns going forward, so I'd just have to figure it out myself, using tax software (TurboTax). I'm pretty sure I didn't make any mistakes on our US returns, nor did I neglect any of the required filings (which changed over time) concerning our RRSPs etc. The IRS never questioned anything. I attribute a huge part of this success to Nelsona, single-handed. I was so very, very lucky to stumble onto this forum back in 2003 or 2004. I can't imagine what I would have done without it.

Eventually we moved back to Canada - which necessitated re-learning Canadian tax as well as keeping up with US because we'd become US citizens - and more recently, in retirement, I have actually handed off to a cross-border accountant. My spouse persuaded me I didn't want to hang onto this responsibility forever. Therefore I just drop by here occasionally out of interest, and share bits of information about retirement topics like CPP and SS. Anyway, Nelsona's depth of knowledge and generosity in sharing information are just amazing, especially over such a very long period. All the very best to you, Nelsona.
