This is our main tax information forum which deals with topics concerning Canadians living and working in the U.S., U.S. citizens contemplating working in Canada, and all aspects of Canadian and U.S. income tax and related adminstrative issues.
Hello! I've been reading these forums for the past hour or so and I must be really bad at this because I'm still confused about what to do.
Anyhoo. My wife (TN visa) and I (TD visa) arrived in the US in November 05. I worked in Canada up until that point. We currently have no ties to canada other than a checking account. My wife worked there until May of 05 from what I remember. Does she even need to file a US return since she's only worked for a month in 05? Do I only need to file a canadian return and specify a departure date?
Look at the "Emigrants" guide on the CRA website, and at IRS Pub. 519.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
The first year tax situation is a bear; I had 14 reteurns to do that year, all tolled.
after the first year however, its pretty simple, unless you have a lot of cross-border investments.
