Okay to file for extension after April 15 from abroad?

Post by Alex »

If I qualify for the automatic two month extension on my US tax return, can I still file an extension after April 15, but before June 15, to get an extra 4 months?

Can this still be done by mail or does the request have to be electronically filed?

Thanks a lot.

Why do you need to file extension? If you don't owe money, you automatically get til Oct 15.
If you do owe money, you owe it from April 15.

Thank you, Nelsona.

Just in case I do end up owing some small tax in the U.S. my concern is late information forms (8891, 8835, hope I remember the right form numbers), not interest or penalties on late tax payments. I want to make sure that the 8891 on my RRSP is not considered late.

nelson- Oct 15th automatic doesn't sound right.

(5) United States citizens or residents whose tax homes and abodes, in a real and substantial sense, are outside the United States and Puerto Rico

If a person described in paragraph (a) of this section requests additional time to file, the person must request the extension on or before the fifteenth day of the sixth month following the close of the taxable year and check the appropriate box on Form 4868, “Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File a U.S. Individual Income Tax Return,â€￾

Plus, anyone filing a 5472 better file an extension

If a person owes no money, they can file by Oct 15, without request for extension.
This has been established long ago.

Its too long ago, for me to bother.

If you charge people to file extension without submitting a payment for taxes due estimated, that's your business, I guess.
