This is our main tax information forum which deals with topics concerning Canadians living and working in the U.S., U.S. citizens contemplating working in Canada, and all aspects of Canadian and U.S. income tax and related adminstrative issues.
How does the US Tax code treat US Citizens who are permanent residents (PR) in Canada and receive things like the Universal Child Care Benefit ( UCCB ) and the Canada Child Tax Benefit ( CCTB ) ? I want to be sure I'm doing this right.
In Canada, it appears the UCCB is a taxable benefit . But the CCTB is a tax-free benefit. (I think I have this right). Is there a treaty provision or anything that says stuff that is tax-free in Canada is also tax free on the US Return?. Or could this be counted as unearned 1099 income that the US will wack US citizens living in Canada with income tax and/or self-employment tax ?
The taxable portion of these is reported as govt income in US.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
