I’m a Canadian citizen and moved to US in Jan 2013 on TN visa for employment along with my family. I quit my employment in Canada in Dec 2012 received one pay check in the first week of Jan 2013 for the last week of Dec 2012.I sold my house in June 2013 and obtained T2062 from CRA in Aug 2013. I disposed RRSP in 2013 and have only a checking account to repay the pending personal loan in Canada.
I relocated once again within U.S in Sep 2013 to a different state and over the last one year I have paid my graduate tuition fees in U.S. Could you pls help me understand
1) what should I do file departure tax in Canada for 2013 and
2) is there’s anything particular that I can do to claim my relocation exps from Canada to U.S and within USA,
3) can I deduct my tuition fees being a non-resident alient in the U.S?

1. you file a departure return, with jan 2013 departure date. It should include only your wages from January. your RRSP should have been withheld 25% and that is all, not appearing on your return.
2. You can't claim any relocation on your Cdn return, but you can on your US return, for both moves, following IRS rules, which should come out on the software package you use.
3. No. You were not a US taxpayer when you were going to school.

After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
