SS# denied

Post by pdfc »

Unbelievable but curious if anyone has experienced this. I am a US citizen who moved to Canada with my family at the age of 17. I did not have a SS# when I left the US and still don't. 45 years later. I take all of my immigration papers, US passport and birth certificate to the SS office and am told I have to prove where I was from the day of my birth( in Calif) to the day I entered Canada at age 17. I moved 24 times during those years. Any help with how to deal with Social Security on this?
I cannot become tax compliant without a SS#........ More frustrated by the day!
I was given a letter from the SSA office stating non acceptance of my information submitted.

You have a current US passport and they denied you an SSN!?

They are a broken system!

Could you apply for an ITIN since you have a letter from SS denying your application?

At this point, it would be bestter to fight SSA. BUt, no harm in submitting a W-7 with your return in order to get it done.

Good sugestion.

My passport is current and the letter from them isn't a denial letter just a non acceptance of information. I am thrilled as I have to drive 5 hours to the nears easy office.
Looked at the W-7 but am not sure it can apply to me. I am a non resident US citizen .
Thanks for your input.

It would apply if you were denied SSN. In any event, getting an ITIN is no piece of cake either.

The idea was to submit the W-& to at least get your 1040 on record.

From what you said above however, it's not like you will be able to produce what they are asking, so your trip there will be to change their mind.

This reminds me to get my son's SIN the next time we go to Canada.

I was in the same situation that you are. Came to Canada as a child, have lived here for 40 years and never had a SSN. I was able to get a SSN at the SSA in Niagara falls with just my birth certificate, Canadian passport and Canadian immigration paper. SSA initially said I would probably not get a number because I had no American passport. Anyway, i got a number in about a week. I have heard of others that have had to have proof like you've been asked for but they are over at the blog

Maybe someone there will be able to tell you what they did. I have since relinquished my US citizenship. Not worth the headaches.

I would try to talk to someone higher up, and explain your circumstances. The people on the front line probably don't know all the ins and outs, nor would they have the power to make exceptions.

I just don't see what "circumstances" our poster is in tha twould require any decision to be made by an SSA phlunkie?

He is a US citizen carrying valid current proof of such. It doesn't matter where he lives or anything else.

Incredible.

I know someone who got the SSN number rejected. The letter said they would need proof he had lived overseas all his life because they want to know he never had a number before. I don't know why they can't just check in their system though.

I agree it's a broken system. As is the IRS.
