Mortgage interest and property tax deductions

Post by jacey2012 »

I am a US/Canadian citizen and have lived and worked in Canada for 3 years. I purchased a home in Canada last year. Can I deduct the mortgage interest and property tax of this house on form 1040 schedule A?

Yes, but why would you need to. Surely you owe no tax on your US return, or you are not doing it properly.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

My husband is still living and working in US, so we need to do married filing jointly.
I use an online tax software to do our taxes. Before I put in my income, my husband has refunds. Although it said, my income is excluded, after I put in my income, it showed we owe taxes. I don't understand why, but at this point, just trying to find deductions we can use to reduce taxes. I followed the questions asked on the software and enter our numbers, really don't know where did I enter wrong????

Probably because you joint income exceeds the exclusion limit, and are having to use a modified tax calculation.
