Dual citizen, living in Canada, commuting to job in US

Post by ksmith55387 »

I am currently living in the US and moving back to Canada this year. I have dual US and Canadian citizenship. I am considering leaving my current employer and working on a contract basis for a US company at a customer project in the US. I would be commuting weekly to the US for the project. My travel to the us will probably be less than 183 days.

I know since I am a US citizen I will have to file US tax returns.

What is the best way to set up the relationship between myself and the US company. They say they can do 1099 rather than W2. Does my US citizenship affect how we can structure the relationship. Would a company to company relationship be better. I could set up a Canadian company and have them pay that instead of paying me directly.

Any other options to consider?

In my opinion it is always best to have the company set up where you live, ie Canada.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
