Having trouble finding someone to do our taxes!!

Post by rayoflight1978 »

I can't find anyone in the Richmond area that can do Canada/USA taxes! If someone can help it would be great. May have to try and do it ourselves.

-I moved to the USA 12/18/11
-I filed exit taxes with CRA for 2011, I didn't file taxes with the IRS because I did not have any income in the 12 days I was here.
-I received some EI premiums from Canada in 2012 which non resident taxes were deducted.
-I withdrew some RRSP's in 2012 which non resident taxes were deducted.
-I have two receipts for charitable donations in Canada for 2012.
-I started working in the USA September 2012 and have a W2 for that income.

My main questions are:

Do I file taxes with the CRA? If so, what kind do I file?
Do I report my Canadian income on my American taxes? If so, what forms do I need to fill out? I am so confused!

You filed a departure return in 2011 with CRA you have no more filings in Canada. All the income you received from UIC and RRSP will be included on your 1040 return and you will claim credit for the non resident tax witheld by Canada. You include the W2 as employment income on 1040 you may be able to deduct the donation from Canada on your return in the US since you are reporting CND income on your US return.

Can this be done on the H & R block program or TurboTax? Which forms do I fill out?

Any software that does a 1040 will suffice, you simply put it on form 1040 in the appropriate line RRSP income is pension, UIC is uneploment and donations are itemized deduction but you my want to take the standard deduction vs itemized you have to try to see which one is best.

... and for form 1116 purposes, the RRSP and UIC incomes are "general limitation income".
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
