TN Status

Post by CDNRN »

I am sorry for the similar post to others, but I have been trying to figure my situation out through reading other posts but they all seem to have a different twist that makes it not applicable to me. Here is my situation.

I am a Canadian RN who work in Canada until Sept. 2012. I then moved to the US on a TN and started work there in Oct 2012 and am still employed there at this time.

I am single. I rented a house in Canada my lease ended and am now renting in the US. However my passport is linked to my parents address in Canada.

I have a Canadian RRSP and have maintained Canadian bank accounts in order to pay my student loans.

I am assuming since I worked in both Canada and the US I have to file in both places, but do I claim the income from the other country on both? What about next year when I work only in the US?

I really have no idea how to even approch this so any assistance would be greatly appriciated. Thanks!

You are an Emigrant for Cdn tax purposes and should follow the "Emigrant" tax guide.

For US, you are a US tax resident. You have 3 options on how to file, I suggest you browse this site for first year options.

Your passport is not linked to any address. What you wrote in there is meaningless.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
