I am a USC in Canada and had a savings account for a minor child in Canada. I have filed the 3520 and 3520-A on this in prior years and am up to date. In 2012, I removed my name from this account, and it's now in the name of a non-USC relative.
I'm asking for help on how to document this on the 3520 and 3520-A. I know that I check this as a Final Return on both forms. THe 3520-A instructions suggest that on Part III (Foreign Trust Balance Sheet), I include the amount that is (was) in the account, even though it's no longer owned by the US person. I'm thinking that I simply put down $0 for Page 3 (Foreign Trust Grantor Statement), item 9. I will add a note about what I've done.
On the 3520, I am not sure if I need to put down any info about the non-USC relative. I am also wondering if I need to fill out any other paperwork (e.g., Form 709). I think that, however, on Pari I, LIine 7, I would simply put No, because there was no distribution to this other person.
Note this is for a small account (<$1000). Deposits and interest are very small. There were no withdrawals or distributions. I just worry that it would look funny that there is still money in the account but I am now calling it a Final Return.
Do I have this right?
Thanks!
