Filing Canada tax as an H1B

Post by dsounders »

Hi,

I'm a Canadian citizen and moved to the US in 2009. I first used TN and then switched to H1-B a little more than a year later. I filed both Canada and US income tax for year 2009 as I had a few months of income from a Canadian company in 2009. However, I didn't know about filing departure tax until recently nor did I file Canada tax as I haven't had any Canadian income since I moved to the US. But then I read online that I would still need to pay taxes to CRA because I didn't file departure tax. Does this mean I should file Canada income tax for the past three years and pay the interests/fines, if any? Or I'd be OK as long as I file a departure document? I'm not sure if I still have ties to Canada: I don't have any property in Canada. I do have RRSP and some CND in some saving accounts, though.

Thanks,
nelsona

You should amend your last Cdn tax return with a departure date and address all issues as of that date. Read the Emigrants guide from CRA website.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
