Do you get an assessment notice from IRS similar to CRA

After you file your taxes with the IRS, are you suppose to get an assesment notice from the IRS similar to the one you receive from CRA?

Hi Nanic,

No - usually you don't hear anything. No news is good news.

Thanks. But I find this a bit backward. You should get at least an assesment notice proving that you filed. I find CRA much better that the IRS on this front.

Yeah - I know what you mean. When I file my Quebec provincial tax return, I actually get a pleasant "thank you for filing letter" - how civilized!. Although, I'd still rather pay lower taxes and hear nothing.

Considering the US govt uses unregistered snail-mail to send such things as passports and Grren cards, it is incongruous thta the IRS would not send a notice of assessment to all filiers. Even when they issue a refund check, it just arrives, all by itself, with nothing attached.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
