Backfiling 8891

Post by eortlund »

I'm helping friends with US taxes tonight. They did not realize the need for 8891 to report their RRSPs. Can they just file 8891s for the years they missed, and then check the election box on the form for the first year they had it?

Sorry, should have googled, I see this question has been asked a lot here and that it is advised to backfile. Can they print copies of the 2011 8891, or do they have to print out a copy of what the 8891 was like in the years they missed reporting?

To my understanding the 8891 form has not changed much from year to year...i downloaded the 2005 8891 form for my 2005 backfile and 2006 form etc etc.

You could probably get away with using the most up to date form for all (not sure about this though).

There is much discussion about this form on this site...familurize yourself with these threads to ensure you fill the form out correctly.
