My tax return may be lost in mail?.

Post by Greg »

I’m thinking my tax return may have got lost in the mail somehow, I’m approaching my 5th week since it was sent via US postal service, and there is still no information available via the IRS web site “Where’s my refund” I had a couple of forms that I sent in with my 1040 (8833, 8891).

The IRS does not even want to here from you until you have waited a full 6 weeks. Just a little concerned because my wife’s return only took 17 days (she filed 1040 & 1116 via US postal service) and the refund was deposited in the account.

I have a small refund coming, anyone know the process of refilling if it turns out truly lost.

If your return is lost, you must file a brand new one.

Since you are due a refund, it is not a big deal, since there is no penalty for filing late if you don't owe.

UYou would want to get a new one in by Aug 15, as this would still be considerd 'timely' in terms of Form 8891 RRSP reporting.

Well this is a weird situation,

I called the IRS today to have them look into my small refund, and according to them the 1040 return I sent them had a balance owing on line 74, and not a refund on line 71, and the agent could not see what I supposedly owe them on file.

So they put me on hold for about 30min while they looked into the problem, when the tax agent came back she asked if I had a copy of my tax return so that we could go through what I had sent in and what they had on file.

Right of the bat what the IRS had for line 7 (Wages) did not even match what I had sent in, the amount they had was actually what my wife sent in on her MFS 1040 return.

Then the agent said the SSN for the dependent that I had clamed on line 6C I NEVER CLAMED A DEPENDENT ON LINE 6C OF MY RETURNBut I did Recognize the SSN it was my daughters SSN that was on my wife’s MFS 1040 return.

The agent believes my MFS & my wife’s MFS return somehow got crossed. The agent said in her 15 years with the IRS this is the first time she has seen this happen. She is sending the problem to the service agency who processed the return.

Even if they mixed our returns up, I still don't understand the balance owing thing since my wife also got a refund this year.

I guess I’ll see what happens within the next 30 days.

Just for my personal info, can I ask what your circumstances are such that filing MFS is advantageous to you?

Is it for state tax purposes?
