Our tax return situation, please help!

Post by Tracy »

We are now US permanent residents and working and living in the United States. Our son has attended a college in Canada since September 2011. He has around $8200 tuition cost and $4500 scholarship for the year of 2011. Now my question is how we can file our income tax return this year. Can we still claim our son as a dependent and get his tuition credit in US return? Does he need to file income tax return in Canada himself?

Any help should be highly appreciated!

Thanks!

The fact that he is in canada does not inhibit you from claiming him exactly as you would if he were in the US.

He may have to file in canada depending on the source of his income.
nelsona non grata. Non pro. Please Search previous posts, no situation is unique as you might think. Happy Browsing :D
