TD F 90-22.1 and RRSPs

Post by VATransplant »

I moved to the US in 1984, and have retained an RRSP, although have not contributed to it for decades. I did not know that I should have been filing form TD F 90-22.1 in regard to it - despite having used professional tax accountants (including Arthur Andersen, back in the day). I thought that filing form 8891 and its predecessors was all that I had to do. How many years back do I have to file, and what is the likely outcome? Thanks

They can go back 6 yrs for this form which is due June 30th, so your best bet is to back file as of JULY 1, 2012 back from 2006, this way if they decide to enforce penalties ( which I do not see it since you filed teh 8891) at least 2005 will be off the table.

Back file means 2006 to 2010, the 2011 form file it before June 30th 2012.

If you find that its too burdensome to file last 6 yrs FBAR, as a mininum it has been suggested that filing at least 3 yrs back ( plus the current yr) should suffice, you can browse this forum and read all posts on this approach also.
